Hydro Generator D (Kaplan Turbine)
Construction of the Pipe
Back to hydro home page.
This is our fourth turbine which is still under construction.
This is another turbine which was built from "Hydroworks".
Again we are doing the controls. There have been some little changes
on the controls these have been:
-Redlion HMI instead of Schneider push buttons.
- GE SR750 Protection relay instead of Schneider Sepam G40.
- 2 Larger Rittal boxes rather then 3 middle sized Rittal Boxes.
The Civil Work (Safety is Paramount).
With plans from Becca Engineering we knew the size of the concrete
and the amount of steel we needed to use. The whole construction is
made of Double D16, and is 300mm thick of M40 concrete. Discussions
on the farm led to these buildings having another use, a bomb
shelter.
With our experience with concrete built up over the construction of the
previous three turbines no risks were taken. Safety was still
paramount.
This is during construction, as you can see we have the end of the
canal and start of the pipe which feds turbine D.

Here is a picture of an onsite safety meeting before construction
begins. As you can see we build the dirt up on the outside of the
pipe as the concrete is set. This allows for a much safer working
practice.

This is the roof of the concrete pipe meeting the walls. There is a
150mm overlap of the roof and shutters, this is to allow the
concrete to get up underneath the roof. Ontop of this roof will be
another 150mm of Concrete.
