A2 Milk

In a nut shell A2 milk is milk with A2 beta casein protein. Its discovery dates back to the early 1980's. It was observed in Samoa with the children being immune to diabetes in there own country but when emigrating to New Zealand it was found that the disease rate surged.

After research by Professor Elliot over a number of years it was found that a milk protein, beta-casin A1, produced by about 10% of New Zealands dairy herd, could trigger insulin dependent diabetes in those prone to the condition.

It is known that Jersey Cows are mostly A2 while  Frisian-Holstein cows are 85% A1.

It has been sold in New Zealand and Australia as a premium brand since 2003. It is just beginning to enter the US market.

Cow’s milk contains six major proteins. Four are casein proteins, the other two are whey proteins. Casein proteins make up about 80 percent of the protein in cow’s milk. A type of casein called beta-casein is one of the major ones, and is itself of different kinds, depending on the genetic make-up of the cow. The most common are beta-casein A1 and beta-casein A2. Milk high in beta-casein A1 is being referred to as ‘A1 milk’ while milk high in beta-casein A2 is being called ‘A2 milk’

Coincidentally, while the majority of New Zealand's cows produced A1 milk, most of the country's top bulls were genetically A2.
