Selling Power to the National Grid

Following on from doing the calculations and prices for the
mini hydro generator. We needed to sell
our power.
After some research the best option was to sell and buy through an
energy retailer. It is more efficient to use all your power then to
sell it we have ended doing some converting of our centre pivot
irrigators from
diesel to electrical our consumption is more or less balanced.
One of our newly converted electrical Centre pivot irrigators. This adds to
the load on what the farm needs.

Another large load is the cow shed shown here from the air. You can
also notice a bit of the boarder dyke irrigation in the bottom right
of the picture.

We approached a number of retailers and we ended up going with the
best deal for buying and selling. There was an option of selling and
buying power on the spot market. As this was a new adventure it was
better to establish the generation and understand how it would click
together.
With the unique location and electrical network for the farm, that
is there is a spur line which comes onto the island and ends there.
With this layout we had an option of putting four LV(400V) TOU (Time
of use) meters on or one HV(11kV) TOU meter for the whole farm. The 11kV
meter was chosen for the job. This 11kV meter was mounted on a pole.
In the picture below you can see the CT and VT's at the top of the
pole under the 11kV line, connected to that is the TOU meter in the
cabinet, about halfway down.

Now the construction could start. The work involved was cleaning up
the irrigation channel and
constructing the power house.
